There are two basic exercise types. Compound and isolation. The compound include using several muscles at once in unison and aimed at producing good results with each. Activities such as pushups, pull ups, squats, and rowing can give you good results.
With isolation exercises you primarily work one muscle at a time. These will include the larger muscles such as biceps and abdominals. Curls, lateral raises, and leg extensions are examples of isolation exercises. Both types are very effective with the compound having the edge in that they work groups of muscle at the same time and are more apt to have balanced results. Balance is the key to success in any good workout program.
