When Tyler Kennedy of the Pittsburgh Penguins left the bench to engage in a fight with Luke Schenn of the Toronto Maple Leafs, everyone knew it was going to get ugly. The NHL Highlights had a field day with the fight and excerpts from the Leagues regulation book showed up on every television sports network.

But at the end of it all, Kennedy earned himself just one game. Still, the penalty is more than just that. It’s a sign that the League is at least somewhat tolerant of players leaving the bench to take out an oponent.

Think back to the eighties. The Flyers might have done well to have Hextall sit out and jum into the game just when they needed his strength most!
